Food Safety Consulting to Fit Your Business Needs
Over the years, many of our clients have expressed their frustration with past consultants and consulting firms that have not delivered on the promises or expectations set forth upon initial hire. Many of these undesirable situations could have been avoided had they been equipped to pick the right consultant for their needs.
Often times what happens is the client makes an uninformed decision out of fear or desperation and rushes into a decision that proves to be disastrous and costly. What pushes otherwise thoughtful, conscientious business owners and professionals to choose the wrong consultant? The answer is simple: they had no idea what to look out for.
Consulting is one of those professions in which a barrier of entry does not exist. It is simple for anyone to call themselves a food safety consultant, advertise, and charge big money for meaningless work. As industry experts in this field, it is easy for us to spot these individuals - the charlatans.
As a business owner, food science, food safety and the myriad of regulations may be new to you. We understand that choosing the right consultant can be a daunting task. Below we outline some warnings and red flags to look out for while you search for the right consultant, along with some useful tips. Even if you decide to secure your food safety and consulting needs elsewhere, consider these when selecting your consultant.
The RED FLAGS of Food Safety Consultant Searching
- Consultants or firms which insist on money upfront without discussing the project and project needs. Many clients report they called X company and they insisted firmly on a $2,000 payment prior to starting any work. We caution all our potential clients against shelling out their hard-earned money without first discussing their situation and potential options to address their needs. If your consultant demands big money upfront or prior to speaking with you about the project, RUN!
- When speaking with the firm, request to speak directly with the consultant that will be working on your project. Ensure the consultant that will be servicing your business is well versed in the services being offered. It is a red flag if they are unable to answer simple questions, cannot give detailed instructions on the nature of the work, or explain the implications of various situations and their likely outcomes. Legitimate consultants interact with Federal regulators often. We are able to tell you about the likely outcomes with reasonable confidence. We will never be able to tell you exactly step-by-step what will happen as each situation is different. However, if your consultant seems to be puzzled or confused by your questions, RUN!
- Request credentials from the consulting firm or independent consultant. For example, if they are working on a FSVP project, ensure they are indeed a legally qualified individual. Request to see their FSPCA Preventive Controls Qualified Individual Certification (PCQI). These certifications are standard in the industry and the information found in these is not confidential or privileged. Many clients reach out to us for damage control because they were unaware of how grossly unqualified the consultant they hired was. It is not until months or years later when the Feds show up and slap them with an FDA 483 citation that the client comes to this realization.
- Ensure the firm and consultant that will service your business are appropriately insured. Request to see their Certificate of Insurance (COI) to ensure they are adequately covered for your business needs. Having insurance is a standard business practice to protect against the event of a negative outcome. A serious consultant has insurance. Ensure your consultant has appropriate insurance. If they do not, RUN!
- Be cautious of consultants which are unable to provide you a reasonably detailed project scope in writing prior to payment. We do this for a living, we have a reasonable idea of the hours it will take to complete a project. We can also tell you the general processes and timeline to completion. We write it down, we communicate it to you, and if anything changes, we communicate the changes promptly. Be very cautious of sharp-dressed MBAs assuring you with their charming personality and elegant suits that you don't have to worry about a thing they will take care of it for you. Worry! Ask questions! Your questions are valid and if they are unable to answer them, RUN!
